The Bridesmaid, 1851
Fitzwilliam Museum,
Cambridge, England
There was an old tradition for bridesmaids in England. They were supposed to take a piece of the wedding cake and pass it through the wedding ring 9 times, and then they would have a vision of the person they were going to marry.

The model's bright gold hair dominates much of this painting. The background is a velvety blue very similar to the dress on Mariana.
